Any interesting museum or gallery in Cayenne?

Cayenne is our main “target” this year. We are going to stay most of our time there but will travel to other parts of French Guiana. We may decide to visit Surinam for few days but it depends on our itinerary. While in Cayenne, we would like to see the interesting spots there. Is there any interesting museum or gallery in Cayenne?

Well, there are two very nice museums in Cayenne. Musée Départemental is located in city center at 1 Rue de Rémire. I suggest you go there and spend few hours because you will see few interesting things. The same goes for Musée des Cultures Guyanaises at 78 Rue Madame Payè.

I visited The Musée des Cultures Guyanaises last year. It is an interesting place with Guiana's early history as a main focus. The exhibits and information go back to the geologic formation of the country and “travel in time” to Amerindian, pre-colonial times. There is a good library upstairs where you can find many publications in English, French and other languages.

Well, it sounds interesting, I missed this one. I went to Musée Départemental few months ago. There is a large stuffed black caiman that looks scary along with other preserved critters. On top of that, there is an ethno botanical display, good 'butterfly room'. If you go upstairs, you can find handicrafts made my Amerindians.

In Cayenne, the Franconi departmental museum, a small building in a Creole house, exhibits some diverse pieces that recreate the history of Guiana. Collections of traditional and American Indian objects sit next to stuffed animals and vestiges of the penal colony. In contrast, the Museum of Guianese Cultures, which is in an old house owned by a gold prospector, boasts a series of engraved objects from different ethnic groups.
