I am looking for some folks who have had the privilege to visit Cartago in Costa Rica before. We are going to travel around Costa Rica for a few weeks next summer, and I have been told that Cartago is a nice place. Are there any interesting ruins to see in Cartago by any chance?

Indeed there are some ruins near Cartago. They have got the very appropriate name of "Las Ruins". The ruins are actually of a church that had been rebuilt time and time again, and there is a very interesting legend of two warring brothers attached to it. When they finally gave up on trying to rebuild the church, Las Ruins were left.

I would thank you for opening this thread, because I am hoping to pass through Cartago during my solo trip to Costa Rica next year as well. The place you mention sounds great and I will definitely go there! Do you have any other suggestions for great places to visit in the area?

Above all else, the area around Cartago is naturally beautiful and if you are physically fit and are not afraid of a bit of hiking, there are many places you could go to in Cartago. I recommend you visit the Irazu Volcano. The volcano is dead now, but is actually one of the most famous ones in Costa Rica.

A visit to the Cartago region provides a flashback in time, with ruins dating back to the 16th century found here, reminding visitors of a time when pre-Columbian inhabitants farmed what was once the country’s breadbasket region. The central park in Cartago also includes the "ruins" of the main church of Cartago, about five block west from the basilica. Despite their beauty, they are not real ruins but an unfinished building, which was badly damaged by the 1910 earthquake and then interrupted.
