Can I go to Sawtooth National Recreation Area for bird watching? I have never been there before, and a friend of mine suggested we go camping there in the summer with our kids. I always enjoyed watching wildlife in their natural habitat, instead of zoos, and I was hoping to pass that to my son, who is ten. Can somebody suggest good sites for bird watching in Sawtooth?

Sawtooth National Recreation Area is excellent place for bird watching. Try Elm Creek campsite. It’s not very big, there’s room for maybe forty people, but since there’s water near by, that means there are plenty wildlife around, birds included. Water is rare in central Idaho, so animals tend to stay near it at all times.

I like the way you think regarding the way to observe wild animals, I hope you manage to teach your kid that, as it is rare these days. As for bird watching, any where you choose in Sawtooth National Recreation Area you’ll see plenty of them. Just bring good binoculars.

If bird watching you seek, you’ll be very happy in Sawtooth National Recreation Area. There’s a great guide to it, called Birds of the Sawtooth, I suggest you get a copy. You can buy it at the Visitor Center. If you like eagles and hawks, look for dead trees, or snags, as they love to perch on bare branches. It gives them clear view of their prey on the ground.
