How long it takes for a train to get from Tokyo to Kyoto?

Hello! I've got sort of a problem but I hope you won't find it difficult to answer. I am planning to take a train ride from Tokyo to Kyoto. Can you tell me how long will it take me to get there? What do you think should I get on a bullet train or will a regular ride be quite ok? Thanks in advance!

Hi! I really dont know anything about the regular rides in Japan. Their trains are like space ships to us. And if I remember correctly every train has its own name. Tokaido Shinkansen stops in Kyoto about an hour after Tokyo. Im not sure about it, but I know it takes about two and a half hours to reach Osaka.
