How safe is Mexico City?

Hello. I am thinking about taking my family to a Mexico City for next weekend. I have planned this trip for them, because they havent been anywhere whole year. But now I have second thoughts. Some of my told me that it is very dangerous there. I dont know should I believe the rumors. How safe is Mexico City?

You are absolutely right . You shouldnt believe the rumors. People can blow some story, and make elephant from mosquito. I also heard the rumors about how Mexico City is unsafe. How people there are kidnapped every day. And people are killed, or women are raped. But I must ask you one question. Is there some really safe place in the world. Wherever you go something bad can happen to you. From diseases to the bad people that would like to rob you or harm you. We mustnt let fear command our life. Only thing that you can do is to be careful.

Mexico City has hardly been affected by the drug wars at all so there is no increased danger there in that respect. To stay completely safe use hotel taxis for traveling around and stay in the main tourist areas (Centro Historico in the day, Reforma, Polanco etc.). Do NOT wander the streets intoxicated late at night as it's easy to wander into less safe neighborhoods. As always, keep an eye out for pickpockets.
