Hi there everyone! I would like to go on a cruise on the Baltic Sea and I am not sure when to go. Can anyone tell me which month is the best to go on such a trip? Is it possible to go cruising considering the fact that the sea is frozen most of the year? I don’t want to worry about any Titanic-like problems.

Oh don’t worry, you won’t have problems like that. The Baltic Sea provides excellent opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment and it is a very good choice for cruising. It is the only sea that enables you to see ten different countries on one trip. You can go there regardless the season because the sea is always beautiful. Many people go on a cruise of the Baltic Sea in August. The sea usually freezes in November and the ice remains until March or May depending on how severe the winter is.

Yes, you are right. The sea freezes for almost 45% of its surface but it only happens when winters are extremely cold and the territory that freezes are usually The Gulfs of Finland, Riga and Bothnia and the Estonian archipelago. Otherwise, when the winter is not severe the sea doesn’t freeze and it is navigable and suitable for a cruise. You just have to bring warm clothes and enjoy the beauties offered by the Baltic Sea region. Perhaps you can try July and August, just to be on the safe side, if you don’t like very cold weather.

The Baltic Sea is often frozen and ice-breakers have to cut the ice first so that it can be navigable. Also bigger ships have problems when the weather is rough so they can’t berth and therefore cruising on a smaller ship would be recommendable. As for the best month to go cruising, I would suggest August or early September because if you come later you will encounter problems with the rough sea and ice on the surface so you will have to skip visits to some ports.
