Should I travel to south america?

Im from england and wanted to know if travelling to south america this summer for two months by myself was a good idea?
i could go anywhere to be honest but i though south america would be something different?
any tips? anywhere i should go or maybe avoid? my girlfriend may join me halfway through as well, is this a good idea? is it safe?
