I’m planning my winter vacation, and I heard that there are several of skiing resorts near Santiago, Chile. I have never been there, and I am intrigued by this possibility. Has anyone been there? What are your experiences? I’m afraid I don’t know almost anything about Chile.

I was in Chile last year, at La Parva ski resort. It is some 25 miles from Santiago, so it is very easy to get there. The powder is excellent, very often waist deep, perfect fro snowboarding. And the greatest thing is that there are no crowds, as the place is somewhat of a secret among the locals.

La Parva is good, but I would recommend Valle Nevado, some 35 miles from Santiago. It is much larger resort then La Parva, and with great variety of tracks. Plus, there are more people there, so it has a night life, which is an important part of any ski holiday. After all, you ahve to relax a bit after all day on the slopes.

I can’t believe that no one mentioned Portillo ski resort, the oldest resort in South America. Last year the Austrian and U.S. Olympic teams trained there, so that should be enough proof of the quality. And they have an excellent ski school, whose director is member of Spanish Demonstration Ski Team.

Santiago is only ninety minutes from some of the best skiing in South America. You don't need equipment to take advantage of this – rental skis, clothes and transport to the slopes are easily arranged – and the runs are close enough to the capital to make day-trips perfectly feasible
