Surprised by airport security in the USA

My husband and I just returned from a week long trip to the United States. I had a great time and my trip to the USA was truly a life time's wish come true for me. I was quite shocked and surprised at the right airport security though. We were warned in advance, but still... I felt like I had been in Guantanamo by the time we got out of the airport

Believe me, when you do a lot of domestic and international flights involving the USA, like I do, then you get used to their rigorous checks and accept them as routine. I know that these checks are a pain in the neck, but I would rather experience some unpleasantness at the airport, then having the plane I am on crashed into some building!

I am going to fly to the United States next month. I have been there before, but that is nearly twenty years ago so I am sure much has changed. I fly a lot within Europe though, and don't find the security checks very length or intrusive. Is it really that much worse in the US?

To be honest it also depends on which airport you are at. They usually want you to take your shoes and coat off, as well as your belt and anything else that may be used to conceal something. Some airports have X ray type checks. If the airport is badly organized overall, the checks can take ages, but at most airports it is not too bad. It does take longer than in Europe though.
