My friends and I would like to explore backcountry in British Columbia. We had several good spots in mind but my brother recommended Mount Revelstoke. Since it is our first trip and first backcountry exploration I could use some suggestions and tips regarding the things I need for winter backcountry in Mount Revelstoke National Park?

Well, you will need plenty of things. First and most important thing is to establish whether you are or will be in avalanche terrain or not. You have to find out the level of experience you and other members of the group have, how far can you comfortably travel each day, let someone know your planned whereabouts, get needed permits, etc.

Here are some of the items you will need: avalanche transceiver, backcountry skis or snowboard, boots, insulating top (synthetic), poles, fleece pants and vest, long underwear top/bottom, climbing skins or snowshoes, outer shell top and pants, warm hat and gloves, probe and shovel, synthetic outer socks with wicking inner socks, etc.

On top of that, you may also need headlamp extra batteries, snow kit (crystal card, loupe, thermometer), signaling whistle/mirror, ski repair kit (spare binding parts, tools), compass and topo map, repair kit, food, sunglasses, goggles, waterproof matches/lighter, candle, fire starter, first aid kit, knife, trip plan (left with friend), emergency blanket, gaiters or insulated over-boots, etc.
