What are trains like in Italy?

Does anyone know where I can find an Italian train schedule? I tried the Tren Italia Website, but you can only search by specific dates/times to see if there is a match. I need a complete schedule. Is there some national railroad there? What are trains like in Italy? Any information might be helpful, please post!

Complete rail schedules are rare to find online. Thomas Cook publishes a book with all rail schedules but it's a physical book. Generally speaking, if you put in the city pairs and a date it will tell you all the train times and you can click through the day to get more. That should be representative of the daily schedule. I'd also plug in a Saturday and Sunday as well as the times may differ.

Trains in Italy are a good way to travel around. They are cheap and reasonably reliable, although some of the older trains are not hugely comfortable. Italy's railway coverage is good, although in rural or mountainous areas you may need to catch a bus instead. An Italian website once quoted Italy Heaven and marvelled at our praise for their railways: they obviously hadn't travelled in the UK. If you're used to British railways you are likely to be impressed by the Italian version.
