Hello my dear forum friends. I am going to Bangkok with a couple of mates this winter. I would like to go well informed so I was hoping someone could tell me what area to stay in when we are over there. We do not really want to get mugged or anything like that. We are also looking for a good time and we would prefer not to spend any time police station like we did last year in Delhi. It was not nice, it was a complete nightmare. So I would really appreciate some help!

My goodness, that sounds awful. I fully understand that you do not want anything of a sort to happen to you again. Let me think. I stayed there a while ago and thought the Pratunam area was ok. But I also stayed at Khao San Road but did not like it much. It was pretty loud and I could not sleep at night. I moved to the Phra Atit area instead and that was ok. I did also heard that the Sukhumvit area was ok but I never stayed that so I don’t really know. I hope you will have a nice time without any trouble!

The Khao San Rd. area is popular with backpackers and the younger budget travelers, the vast majority of tourists who come to Bangkok stay in the Silom/Sathorn, Sukhumvit, Ploenchit, Siam and Pratunam areas which are all very close to each other. The Silom area is a very good area to stay in, not only do you have the Skytrain, you also have the subway and the river is within walking distance (or short Skytrain ride) where you have access to the water taxis and tourist boats. The boats are great ways to get to Chinatown, the Grand Palace, Wat Po and even Khao San Rd.. The Saladaeng Skytrain stop and the Silom (subway) stop provide easy access to many areas in Central Bangkok, they don't go everywhere but they go to enough places to make getting around very easy and is a good way to avoid the traffic. There's also plenty of good restaurants, shopping and plenty of nightlife in the Silom area, it's a great area to stay in. Here's a couple of websites that should help. Have fun.
