My new partner and I are going to Botswana for two weeks together. He has been there before, as he used to live in Africa years ago. For me, it will be the first time on the most ancient continent. Chobe National Park is our absolute priority. My partner says this is nonsense, but I am worried about diseases. Which ones should I avoid with in Chobe?

All of them of course! Are you saying that you expect me to say that there is some disease you should avoid, whereas you should try and get some other? Joking aside though, you should check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website which has a whole list of countries and travel advice. This includes advice about the political situation but also what vaccinations you may need before you go.

I don't think there is any serious possibility of contracting any tropical disease in Chobe National Park. I have been to Botswana many times and while I have been vaccinated before, I was not told that I needed any for Botswana. Besides, you won't be living in the park but just visiting. Close contact with animals may bring some danger, but you won't have that.

With a shocking 23% of the adult population facing the AIDS reality in Botswana, this disease is Chobe National Park’s biggest health threat and is increasing each year. Travellers to Botswana only face risk of HIV or AIDS exposure through sexual relations with an infected partner, or through a blood transplant with infected blood or needles.
