Why is adventure tourism so popular nowadays?

I've never been much of a adventurer (I don't count wild night life ) but it seems to me that people are fed up with riding channels in Venice, exploring the pyramids, taking kids to Disneyland, plain lying in the sun and are looking for something else?

Is this fast life-style we are living in making us seek more adrenalin or is it just cool to be adventures today?
