Wildlife near San Jose?

What is the nearest place to see some good fauna, which San Jose is so well known of? I am spending 7 nights in Santa Theresa and I would love to show my son some rare species and animals. We would appreciate any suggestions on the places where we could drive to only for couple of hours and come back before night. Thanks!

The closest place to San Jose is La Paz Waterfall Garden. It’s easily reached during a day trip or an overnight. The other place is Zoo Ave Costa Rica – they are active in rescue and conservation. And if you go to San Jose Zoo, you can take a closer look to some very rare species such as Green Macaw, Scarlet macaws and the Quetzal.
